About
Introduction
Welwyn Garden City is unique.
It was founded by Ebenezer Howard in 1920, with the aim of combining a vibrant town life with the beauty and delight of the countryside. The subsequent layout and design of the town centre, employment areas, parkland, housing areas and many of the houses themselves followed very precise architectural and landscape rules.
The ideas Ebenezer Howard proposed and that were built at both Letchworth and Welwyn Garden City are internationally renowned and have influenced planning practices of countries around the world. We should be rightly proud of this history, and bear it in mind when planning for the future.
