Chimneys and Flues
Policy EM1 - Extensions and Alterations Policy
Policy EM5 - Energy Efficiency and Other Roof Alterations
Chimneys are a common feature within Welwyn Garden City. They provide variety across roofscapes and relief within the wider views of the street scenes.
Removal of existing chimney stacks should not be undertaken and will not be accepted. This includes shortening of the stacks or removal of pots.
The replacement of the existing original chimneys will only be acceptable should the proposed design reflect existing architecture, details, materials, styles and proportions relating to both existing property and wider street scene.
Proposed new chimneys maybe acceptable should the design demonstrate that the proposed feature relates to the original Garden City home and wider streetscene.
Replacement of pots or flu terminals should respond to the existing design and style of the home.
The proposal of metal flues maybe acceptable should they not be visible from public vantage points. Flues should not exceed 1m in height and be finished in a black appearance. Metal flues can alternatively be housed in a new chimney stack which is appropriate and responds to the original property
